Three Days of 3000’ High Fun
I wanted to say a big thank you for those who joined me for the Welsh 3000s Three Day Challenge on the weekend. THANK YOU!! :)
The Carneddau range, the Glyderau and outliers, and the Snowdon massif all trekked across. Fifteen 3000’ Welsh craggy mountains. Over 60 kilometres of steep bouldery footpaths and scrambling, and 4925 metres of ascent! Do you realise that it is only 3488 metres from Everest base camp to its summit! Pah! Easy! ;)
We had drizzle, cloud, rain, gusty winds and sunshine and blue skies. Sometimes we were cocooned within a complete blanket of off white cloud and other times we had far reaching amazing vistas of moorland, hill and mountain all around.
By far the most memorable bit for me was at the end of day two, after the traverse of Elidir Fawr, Y Garn and both Glyderau, stood upon the deserted summit of Tryfan. Nobody else there, just us, in the sunshine, the Llyns of Bochlwyd, Idwal and Ogwen far below ringed by towering scree slopes, sheer crags and buttresses, and tumbling streams and waterfalls all leading to the dizzy heights we had, over the two previous full days, scaled. The two standing stones of Adam and Eve stood silently, patient, enticing, so I grabbed the opportunity and after carefully clambouring to the top of one I plucked the courage to, after many many years of summiting Tryfan, finally jump to the other! So now as tradition, and legend, has said I know have the ‘Freedom of Tryfan’…

What is Your Most Favourite Mountain?
Many people ask me "What is your most favourite mountain?" and I can always answer with ease. Tryfan.
As you drive along the A5 from Capel Curig and rounding a corner the view of Tryfan, and its gnarled rocky skyline, suddenly open up in front of you. Tryfan, meaning 'Three Peaks', was last year resurveyed by Ordnance Survey from 916m to 917.5m (3010ft). So all of a sudden there's a little more of my most favourite mountain to climb! ;)
My most favourite route up? If you have stood upon Tryfan's summit before you may well know... My most favourite route is the narrow invigorating scramble of the North Ridge. An amazing rock clambouring ridge. The two 'standing stones' of Adam and Eve, on Tryfan's summit, stand nearly three metres tall. Tradition and legend say that if you take the leap of faith from one to the other you will have the 'Freedom of Tryfan'.
Want to stand on Tryfan's rocky summit?
Well you can with Summit Journeys! August 12 to 14 (Friday to Sunday) you can take part in the Welsh 3000s Three Day Challenge. All of Wales' 3000 foot mountains in three days, including Snowdon, Crib Goch and of course Tryfan.
Or how about the Snowdonia Discovery Walks, September 7 (Wed) to 11 (Sun). Five days of high Snowdonia summits, with routes including the Southern Carneddau, the Snowdon Horseshoe, and Tryfan (via the North Ridge!!) and the Glyderau.

Southern Snowdonia Walks
Southern Snowdonia Walks – Cadair Idris and the Aran Horseshoe
The Classic Walks of Southern Snowdonia
What’s it all about?!?
Trek through some of the most spectacular scenery in Wales in this weekend packed full of majestic and soaring mountains. Experience vistas of hidden valleys, panoramic horizons and exhilarating towering buttresses as you traverse the heights in a memorable Summit Journey.
Saturday - Cadair Idris
Cadair Idris, the ‘chair’ of the legendary Idris, a giant mythological hero and relative of King Arthur, is an isolated massif, a stone’s throw from the sea. It stands on guard, with its deep cwms, precipitous buttresses and towering crags, as the most southern high mountain range in Snowdonia.
This dramatic mountain trek passes through Cwm Cau and Llyn Cau (The Shut-in Valley and Lake), described by many as the one of the finest cwms in all of Wales. Craig Cwm Amarch (Amarch Valley Rock) is the first summit, followed by the highest point of the Cadair Idris massif, Penygadair (The High Seat), and finally Mynydd Moel (Bare Mountain).
A classic mountain trek of unforgettable views.
Sunday - The Aran Horseshoe
The Aran mountains lie between the towns of Dolgellau and Bala. A seldom frequented range yet full of stunning views in all directions.
The horseshoe takes in two grassy, yet lofty, summits, Drysgol and Aran Fawddwy (translated means ‘Mawddwy Mountain’). Aran Fawddwy’s height of 907m makes it just 7 metres, or under 30 feet, short of being a member of the Welsh 3000s!
When is it happening?
Saturday 25th to Sunday 26th June 2011
How much does it cost?
For the two full days of fully guided mountain treks the cost is £60 per person. Or if you only wish to take part in one of the days, no problem, £30 per walk!
